Hospitalization and privacy

posted Jun 9, 2010 3:32 PM by John Cannon

This is a note to the congregation and visitors to ask that before you put someone who is hospitalized on the prayer list or visitation list to please make sure that you have that person's verbal permission to do so.  Unfortunately, due to HIPAA and privacy rules, anyone being treated in the hospital must explicitly give you permission to share information about their medical condition, and as a volunteer pastor at the local hospital, we don't want Pastor Paul in any hot water.  The hospital has a zero-tolerance policy about those sort of issues.  It's not normally a problem, but as a volunteer, our pastor is considered a part of the hospital and falls under more privacy restrictions than usual.  Thanks for your understanding in this matter.
